Frequently asked questions
Do I need to be any good at this?
No, and that is not politeness. Most people in the room have not made anything since school. Every class is built so a complete beginner can work right along side the seasoned artist.
What do I need to bring?
Nothing at all. Materials, tools, aprons and the firing are included in the price. Wear something you would not mind getting glaze or paint on.
How long is a class?
One to two hours, and we finish when we say we will.
How many people will be there?
Never more than 8 people. That is a hard limit, not a target — the seat count shown on each class is real, and when it reaches zero the class is genuinely full. I welcome teaching individual's just as much as small groups, so if you're looking for a private lesson outside the classes on the calendar, just contact me and we'll set something up!
Can I book a seat next to a friend?
Book two seats on the same class and you will be sitting together. You do not need to tell us. We have plenty of table space and the chairs move so you can always be near the people you come with!
When do I get my pottery back?
Pottery has to be fired and cooled twice. The first firing is a bisque firing and it will be done between your combo classes. The second firing happens after the glazing is done and cannot be done for individual pieces. The whole process takes a good 24 hours each time so I ask that you give me a week after you glaze to allow me to load the kiln as full as possible and complete the firing. I will always contact you as soon as your piece is ready to be picked up and so long as I know your coming, I'll be here to meet you with it.
What if my piece breaks in the kiln?
It happens occasionally; kilns are not perfectly predictable and sometimes air bubbles are sneaky and get missed causing pieces to come apart in the firing. We will tell you if this happened, and if it was our doing we will put you in another class on us.
What if I need to cancel?
Cancel more than 48 hours before the class and you get studio credit good for a year. Inside 48 hours the seat cannot be refunded — but you are very welcome to send someone else in your place. Just tell us the name. The full detail is in the refund policy.
What if I do not turn up?
The seat is forfeit. A class is a reserved chair at a particular time, and once it has started an empty chair cannot go to anybody else.
Can children come?
Some classes are just for children, some are for families, some are drop-off camps, and some are adults only — each class says which. Anyone under 14 needs an adult to sign them in and they are welcome to stay and wait or run an errand while their child is busy making art. Most of the kids art classes are meant for kids ages 8-13, exceptions can be made, but please contact me before assuming it's ok. High school age students of 14-18 are welcome to take any of the adult classes.
Can I book the whole room?
Yes. One price for the room for your group, any medium on the menu, and you bring your own food and drink. Details are on the home page under Private bookings.
Do you sell gift cards?
Yes, delivered by email as soon as you buy one, or printable if you would rather hand something over. They do not expire and can be used on any class with a seat free.
I have an allergy, or I am pregnant, or stairs are difficult.
Tell us when you book. None of these issues are a problem if we know in advance and we can make sure you have any accommodations needed.
Do you ship anything out?
No. Nothing ships — every class is in person at the studio, and gift cards arrive by email.
